Republic’s Altic charged in fatal shooting attack in Springfield
Republic man faces charge of second degree murder
A Republic man who was already being held in the Greene County Jail was recently charged with a shooting which resulted in the death of a man in June. Aaron Allen Altic, 34, is charged with second degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. The criminal complaint against Altic also lists an additional charge of murder in the second degree, with the victim shot “as a result of the perpetration of the Class C felony of unlawful possession of a firearm.” The second murder charge is listed on the criminal complaint as an alternative to the first murder in the second degree and the armed criminal action charges.
Shooting occurred June 5
According to the probable cause statement in the case, on June 5 of this year, Springfield Police officers were called to the scene of the shooting, where they found the victim lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and a second wound on his side directly below the armpit.
Asked who shot him, the victim said, ‘Two white guys, white girl.” He was then taken to the hospital for treatment; he died on June 23 from his injuries.
Two witnesses who lived at the residence, identified as Witness One and Witness Two, told officers they were waking up when they heard what they described as the victim fighting with two men and a woman fighting with the victim, after which they said they heard the gunshot. They then found the victim lying on the floor with a gunshot wound.
Springfield Police officers processed the scene and found a spent 9mm casing and a silver projectile with what appeared to be “red paint” on it.
Woman claims victim punched her in the mouth
The officer said he then spoke with a witness who told him that the victim had punched her in the face. She said that she then told Altic, her “significant other,” who shouted he was going “to kill that (expletive).”
The witness said that she, Altic and two other individuals drove to the house where the victim was. She said the other three went into the house while she stayed in the car, but she got a “weird feeling” and went up to the house. She said she saw “(redacted) was on top of (Witness Three), who was lying in bed, and saw (redacted) hitting (Witness Three).”
She also said that during the incident, a light was knocked down and pointed at the victim’s eyes, and that she saw the victim waving a gun around but said she “didn’t think (the victim) could see with the light in their eyes.” She also said that she saw Altic point a gun at the victim and shoot him. The investigator asked her if Altic told her anything, and she told the investigator that Altic said to her, “I told you I would shoot that (expletive).”
The witness also gave the investigators permission to do a computer forensic examination of their phone, during which they found a message sent to her by Altic. It said, “I told her what I done to that (expletive) is nothing compared to what I’ll do to whoever stole you.”
Several expletive-laden messages from an additional person, sent to the witness on June 22.
Altic allegedly tried to flee when confronted by Springfield police
According to the probable cause statement, Springfield Police officers received information that showed Altic was at a certain address in Springfield. Special Response Team officers surrounded the residence while wearing gear marked “POLICE”. Altic allegedly attempted to flee the scene by jumping from a two-story window, but sustained injuries in the fall. The probable cause statement reported that he was taken to Cox South Hospital for surgery and was booked into the jail “at a later date.”
The investigator also reported that a warrant was granted to search Altic’s Facebook page, in which they found a thread in which Altic allegedly stated “I’m facing a long time in prison,” and “Someone put their hands on (redacted) and I put a hole in him,” among other messages.
Altic had already been booked into the Greene County Jail on Sept. 10 on stealing charges; the charges related to the shooting were filed against him on Friday, Nov. 15. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for a bond review hearing.
