Two Republic High School sophomores were chosen in April to take part in the Missouri Scholars Academy, hosted by MU Columbia, this summer. Vivianna Deken and Baron Carey will attend the academy, a three-week program held in June.
Both students said they will be meeting new people from across the state.
“I look forward to being with people who are similar to me and enjoy learning,” Carey said. “I just look forward to building relationships.”
Deken expressed a similar sentiment.
“What I am most looking forward to is meeting people from all over Missouri and building new connections,” she said.
Deken said she hoped the academy would expand her breadth of knowledge and give her new guidance in future decision making.
“Going into this academy, I hope to expand my field of knowledge and amplify my desire to learn,” she said. “I find the many classes given to me to learn very exciting, and I hope to take these opportunities and help them guide me through my future educational decisions.”
Carey said he was not only looking forward to the learning experience but also sharing it with other participants at the Scholars Academy.
“I don’t even know what I’m hoping to learn,” he said. “I’m just excited to learn new things and explore different subjects than what I am generally used to. Also, learning new things with others will be really fun, because we are doing it together.”
After high school, Carey plans to go on a two-year mission for his church, then return and study engineering. Deken plans to go to college and pursue a career in the medical field.
