Rick Shuler beat cancer once, but it came back for a rematch. Now suffering from inoperable Stage Four cancer which has stricken both his lungs and his brain, Shuler can no longer work or drive a car.
“He’s unable to work,” said Donnie Shuler, Rick’s brother. “They won’t release him to drive a car, because he has comprehension issues. That tumor’s pressing in on that lobe of his brain that allows him to comprehend things well, and it also affects his eyesight. He’s already hindered by only having one eye to begin with, so he’s totally blind when it does that.”
To help Rick with living and medical expense, friends and family are holding the Shuler Strong Benefit and Concert at the Walnut Grove School on Saturday, Sept. 21, with all proceeds going to Rick Shuler. The all-day event includes karaoke, an auction, and two concerts, featuring Paul Gregg and Dave Innis of Restless Heart and The Okies. Lisa Gregg, formerly of the Faith Hill band, Cody Gregg, a local Nashville talent, will also perform. The benefit begins with breakfast at 10 a.m., during which time people who are donating pies and other items for the auction can drop them off. Karaoke follows at 11 a.m., and the auction takes place at 2 p.m.
The first concert will take place at 5 p.m.; the second takes place at 8 p.m. The winners of the auction will be announced during the second concert’s intermission at 8:30 p.m.
Donnie Shuler urged people to “just come out Saturday and support (Rick) the best that they can.” He promised those who come out won’t be disappointed. “We’re having that concert, and it’s going to be a great time and a great show,” he said.
