Cunningham named new Wilson’s Creek Battlefield superintendent

Sarah Cunningham
New leader to assume role in late September
The National Park Service announced in a press release on Aug. 3 that Sarah Cunningham will take the helm of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield as the new park superintendent. She succeeds former Superintendent Ted Hillmer, who retired on Jan. 3. Cunningham’s first day on the job will be Sept. 27.
Cunningham, a native of Warrenton, is no stranger to Wilson’s Creek; she began her career in the Park Service there in 2005.
“I am honored to be selected as the superintendent of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, where my career began 15 years ago,” Cunningham was quoted as saying in the press release. “It is an incredible opportunity and privilege to join the park’s outstanding staff, volunteers, partners and the community in telling the diverse stories of the Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.”
National Park Service Regional Director Bert Frost was quoted in the release as stating Cunningham is an outstanding choice for the role as the park’s superintendent.
“I am pleased to welcome Sarah Cunningham as superintendent of Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield,” he said. “Sarah will be a great asset for Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield with her broad understanding of park operations and leadership.”
Currently, Cunningham is serving as the Acting Superintendent of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution Parks Group in South Carolina.
The group includes Cowpens National Battlefield, Kings Mountain National Military Park, Ninety-Six National Historic Site, and the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
Prior to her current assignment, Cunningham also served as Acting Superintendent for Guilford Courthouse National Military Park from October 2018 through February 2019. She has also been an interpretive park ranger at Guilford, the Ninety-Six National Historic Site, and Wilson’s Creek.
Cunningham is a graduate of Missouri State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in history. She also holds two advanced degrees: a Master’s of Arts in public history with a concentration in museum studies from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and a Master’s of Science in resource interpretation from Stephen F. Austin State University.
