Republic girls’ soccer holds on, avenges loss in district opener

Republic got goals from Cameron Burton and Josalyn Weymuth to beat Carthage in the first round of the district tournament at Kickapoo High School Saturday, 2-1. Republic scored the first two goals of the game and held on for the victory after Carthage scored late in the second half.
Republic scored first when Cadence Lugar played the ball ahead to Burton, who scored on a breakaway late in the first half. Republic made the score 2-0 early in the second half when Weymuth connected off a cross from Molly Blades.
“Carthage is a good team. It was a tough win,” said coach Kevin Hauck. “I was proud of how the girls fought, and (we) had some girls off the bench play some good minutes for us, which helped because it was hot. Graci (Coleman) made a couple really big saves in the second half.”
Carthage scored its only goal with about three minutes remaining.
Republic improved to 9-14 this season, and advanced to play top-seeded Kickapoo in the semifinals.
