Host Pirate football beats Pierce City Eagles, 20-7
Mooneyham rushes for one, passes for two touchdowns in win
The Ash Grove High School football team added another win on Friday, Sept. 16, as they hosted and defeated Pierce City, 20-7.
The Pirates got on the board first when Brock Mooneyham hit Nate Trammell for a 24-yard touchdown pass to put Ash Grove up 6-0, which was followed by a two-point conversion. After Pierce City cut the lead to 8-7, Pirate Mooneyham would strike again, this time from two yards out to Brady Nicholson to increase Ash Grove’s lead to 14-7 at the half.
It would be a defensive third quarter as neither team would score, but Mooneyham would hit pay dirt in the fourth quarter from six yards out to score the Pirates final touchdown of the game, increasing the lead to 20-7.
Mooneyham would pace the Pirates both passing and rushing, as he would finish 6-of-15 for 54 yards and two touchdowns from the air, while gaining 103 yards on 21 carries with a score, from the ground.
Trammell notched two catches for three yards and a touchdown, and Nicholson would finish with 23 yards on four catches with a touchdown.
The Pirates remain in third place in the Class 1, District 3 standings with 42.64 points. Marionville still leads with 62.36 points, followed by; Sarcoxie (47.98 points), Ash Grove, Thayer (34.56 points), Cabool (30.58 points), Pierce City (26.36 points), Miller (24.85 points) and Diamond (21.25 points).
Ash Grove is now 3-1 on the season and can put more distance between themselves and Miller, as they will travel to Miller this Friday night.
Volleyball
It was a tough week for the Lady Pirate volleyball team, as they went 2-4 last week. At the Buffalo Lady Bison Invitational Tournament in Buffalo on Saturday, Sept. 17, Ash Grove lost in two sets to Stockton, Conway and Fair Grove but did beat Hallsville in two sets.
Ash Grove traveled to Lockwood on Thursday, Sept. 15, and came home with a four-set victory, but lost in three sets to Buffalo at home on Monday, Sept. 12, 13-25, 18-25 and 19-25.
The Lady Pirates are 3-6 on the season and were scheduled to play at Skyline on Monday night before hosting Diamond last night.
