Ash Grove High School eliminated from T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights contest
Ash Grove High School has been eliminated from the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights competition after failing to achieve enough votes.
The Pirates were finalists for the award, achieving about 33,000 votes when all was said and done. For their prior efforts, they were awarded a total of $30,000.
The winner of the Midwest division, Menasha High School in Wisconsin, achieved a total of 422,583 votes and will go on to face finalists from other divisions for a chance at the final prize of $1 million. Menasha's cause was purportedly helped by a televised plea during last week's World Series games involving the Milwaukee Brewers.
Ash Grove Athletic Director Grant Williamson said that the money Ash Grove earned in the contest will be put toward new weight room equipment.
“Our run in the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights competition has come to an end, but we are incredibly grateful for everyone who voted, shared our posts, and helped spread the word,” said a statement from Ash Grove Athletics.
"While we didn’t receive enough votes to advance to the next round, we are thankful for the support of our community and the opportunity to compete for funding to improve our athletic facilities.
"Our primary focus for the funds we received will be upgrading our weight room to provide our student-athletes with better equipment and more opportunities to grow, get stronger, and compete at a high level. These are much needed and will support athletes across every sport as well as students in weights classes.
"Thank you for always showing up for our Pirates! We are proud to be part of such a supportive community.”
