Former cop Martin sentenced to 35 years in prison for abuse

A Republic man and former law enforcement officer was given a sentence amounting to 42 years in prison on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Greene County Justice Center in Springfield. John Edwin “Ian” Martin, 53, was convicted on Thursday, June 27, on nine counts of second-degree statutory sodomy.

Republic’s Miller charged with assault, armed criminal action in alleged machete attack

A Republic man is in the Greene County Jail after he was arrested for allegedly striking another man repeatedly with the handle of a machete.
Leroy D. Miller, 64, was taken into custody on Tuesday, Sept. 24. He faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Republic’s Smith remembered as dedicated coach, mentor

Kenneth “Todd” Smith, a beloved figure at Republic High School, has passed from the scene. The former Republic science teacher and athletic coach died on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the age of 59, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
